The provision of street lighting is one of the most important tasks of city councils. The high cost of operation and maintenance is an economic responsibility for councils, and additionally the environmental factors should be taken into account. With current technologies, the inefficient management of energy can lead directly to light pollution and indirectly to unnecessary CO2 emissions. Many rules and laws have been created verifying this inefficiency with the aim of introducing savings and pollution reduction.
The application of measures such as control of lighting zones, greater regulation of the hours of lighting, improvements in facilities and an electrical analysis of lights position allow to progress in this line reaching costs savings up to 40%. In this sense, Barcelona Digital Technology Centre, in collaboration with a consortium of lighting and technological companies set up the SIIUR Project (Integral Solution for Urban Lighting). The new lighting system has been implemented in Passatge Mas de Roda, Barcelona, at 22@district, with a dual objective: To test new more efficient lighting systems and to integrate a number of technological features and services to develop a real environment of Smart City, using the infrastructure that is developed around.
SIIUR project
(Integral Solution for Urban Infrastructures) is an innovative and pioneer urban living lab that focuses on Intelligent Urban Lighting in the Smart-City concept. It is based on the integration of new ICT technologies for public services by using a public lighting infrastructure. The lighting system is designed to integrate different services, infrastructures, telecommunications and other elements to improve management and maintenance, while reducing the consumption of public space and the growth of street equipment.SIIUR project
is conceptualized, designed and developed in a format of economical, industrial and commercial cooperation between the most important companies of technology and urban lighting in Catalonia. The Sustainability of the model is assured by a social network model based on the strength of social interactions the companies to create synergies, knowledge, products and projects between them by promoting a new corporate culture based on collaboration and open innovation. The project is led by Barcelona Digital Technology Centre with the collaboration of Barcelona City Hall (22@Barcelona). The consortium is composed by different government institutions, lighting and technological companies, universities and research centers. The living lab is equipped with street lamps with LED technology to achieve cost and pollution savings. These street lamps are equipped with a series of sensors, whose function is to process environmental information of the area to detect presence and adjust the lighting of the street according to the affluence and use of it. Street lights are connected to a Street Lighting Cabinet that centralizes all communications and services. Services such as Fiber to the Home, Wi-Fi or Electrical Vehicle recharging points are centralized. It also has a touch screen that shows environmental information and other public information (weather forecast, cultural agenda…). The whole system can be managed independently and remotely from a control center, managing regulation of street lighting, monitoring system faults and measuring consumption. The lighting system is designed to integrate different services and elements to improve the management and maintenance, while reducing the consumption of public space and the growth of street furniture services. It is expected that in future development the system will host and manage other services such as bus stops, urban solid waste, car parks, irrigation systems… and will be a prominent example of how to manage all city services in a sustainable way within a Smart City.
